But equity prices do not wait for audited earnings. They capitalize the expected future stream. If investors believe that chip prices, utilization rates, and margins will improve over several quarters, they may buy before monthly export data confirms the story. This explains why an index can behave as if a recession has ended while households still feel the weight of high borrowing costs.

My experience auditing early crypto projects taught me to separate a compelling narrative from the mechanism that carries it. The same discipline applies here. In a whitepaper, the promise is not the protocol. The settlement logic, permissions, and incentives are the protocol. In Korea, the promise is AI demand. The settlement logic is whether that demand reaches Korean manufacturers as profitable, repeatable orders.

The next question is foreign capital. Korea’s market is highly exposed to international investors, and program trades can amplify their decisions. A positive earnings revision for major chip companies may attract foreign buying. Yet Korea cannot treat monetary policy as an isolated domestic lever. The won has faced periods of weakness against the dollar, and the interest-rate gap with the United States remains relevant. A premature easing signal could weaken the currency, raise imported energy costs, and complicate the inflation outlook. A rally that assumes both lower rates and a stable won may be assuming a particularly favorable global environment.

The fiscal channel is similarly indirect. Government support for semiconductors, AI, batteries, and strategic manufacturing can improve the long-term economics of capital investment. Tax incentives and infrastructure spending can reduce costs for companies. They can also inflate expectations before the projects produce measurable cash flow. Policy support is a bridge, not revenue.

The real economy provides the harder test. Korea’s export figures, especially semiconductor exports, must continue improving. Manufacturing surveys must show that the recovery is broadening rather than remaining confined to a few technology names. Consumer spending must stabilize despite household debt. Employment must translate into income growth, not merely a low headline unemployment rate.

This distinction matters for portfolio safety. A concentrated index can rise while many companies remain weak. If the rally is led by a small group of semiconductor giants, an investor who owns the broad index may still be exposed to one dominant macro factor. Diversification by ticker does not equal diversification by earnings driver.

There is also an important currency feedback loop. Foreign equity inflows can support the won, and a stronger won can reduce the local-currency value of exporters’ overseas earnings. A weaker won can enhance reported revenue but increase imported input costs and intensify inflation pressure. When a move is powerful enough to interrupt program trading, the exchange is revealing a technical vulnerability: too many strategies are responding to the same price information at the same speed.

That does not make the semiconductor thesis false. It changes the risk profile. A strong cycle can still produce a poor entry point when expectations outrun revisions to actual earnings. The next negative surprise does not need to disprove AI demand. It only needs to show that demand is arriving later, margins are lower, or capital spending is being spread across more suppliers than expected.

A geopolitical shock would expose that fragility quickly. Korea sits at the center of sensitive technology supply chains, with commercial links to both China and the United States. Tighter export controls, renewed tension on the peninsula, or a sudden change in global AI spending could redirect capital within hours. Sidecar can slow the first wave. It cannot remove the risk.
