That is precisely why we need to move slower.
Context: NVIDIA has been building toward this moment since CES 2025, when it sketched a DRIVE AI platform paired with an Alpamayo foundation model. The name “Alpamayo 2 Super” implies an iteration: more capable, “Super” as in H100 Super, but aimed at perception, planning, and training. The strategic logic is familiar to anyone who has audited platform businesses. NVIDIA does not need to operate Robotaxis. It needs every Robotaxi developer to train on DGX clusters, simulate in Omniverse, and deploy on DRIVE Thor. An open model is the bait.
Let us stress-test what “open” means inside NVIDIA’s world. Open weights are not open systems. “Open” may mean a downloadable set of parameters. It does not mean training data, data pipelines, safety case, or threat model are disclosed. In my years auditing cryptographic and AI systems, the interface is rarely the risk; the environment is. But NVIDIA is not just selling chips. It is selling a vertically integrated training-to-deployment pipeline. Open models do not decentralize trust. They centralize it under someone else’s license.
